A rather large cake and a lot of candles were needed in El Salvador today as silver-haired Cruz Hernandez, the oldest person in the world, celebrated her birthday, at the ripe old age of 128. :-o
Surrounded by some 200 people at her party, many of whom were dressed as Salvadoran mythological heroes, Hernandez, who now spends most of her time dozing, reached the miraculous milestone in relative quiet, given that she does not speak any longer. According to national birth registry officials, Hernandez was born in 1878, in one of the country's central provinces, where she gave birth to 13 children. She now has 60 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren.
