View Full Version : Sound Issues
Right, It's quite obvious now that I cannot resolve the issues that I am having with my sound, so I have decided to get myself a new CPU, any ideas on what specs and operating system, would be appreciated.
Regards Paul.

hi m8, all depends on what you're going to use the comp for, how much you want to future proof it, how much you want to tinker with it and how much you have to spend.....!
So many options nowadays - quad core, dual core, 64bit O/S..... almost too many choices. I think the XP 64bit O/S is still a bit buggy (but is far better than it was) and Vista is still in its infancy for trouble free gaming (IMOH) - if you're a serious overclocker then quad core 64 bit is the way to go - I suspect you're just after a better gaming experience though....?
You also need to consider compatibility with your current hardware - some CPU's need specific memory types, so an additional (unforeseen) RAM upgrade can prove costly - as can unforeseen motherboard upgrades!!
I've attached a .txt file detailing my current box (including what I paid for the components compared with what they cost today) which might help you. You can pick up a still decent and quick CPU for under ?100.
Personally, I prefer the Athlons for gaming but there's not a whole lot of difference between AMD and Intel nowadays - I'm also a bit out of touch as haven't done a serious upgrade in about 12 months - give me a shout if you need any advice or a 2nd opinion on anything though.
Cheers.

Personally I remain unconvinced about the merits of 64bit systems. Yes, they give you the facility to address more memory but you'll never need that unless you have more than 3Gb RAM installed..
The drivers are generally less well supported and mature, hence buggier.
I wouldn't consider Vista for a gaming rig. It's got to be XP still, again for the proven drivers and the level of control over your system. Vista has too many unknowns for my taste.
Of course in the end it does come down to what you want to spend but I'd suggest a system based on a dual-core processor, with a couple gigs of ram and the best gfx.card you can afford will do everything you need for a good length of time.
Hi David what about something like this.

Just got around to reading the specs in detail. That's a hell of a system.
I'm sure that's going to fly...
If I'm going to be picky I'd wonder about a windowed case and wireless interference, but that's a bout all I can come up with.
Nice one. I'm jealous.
Thnx David, I've also had xp preloaded, and an extra rom drive, delivered for £740
I'm Happy.
Judging by their feedback it could take a month, sob.
